Bash
I wasnât sure what I expected when I knocked on her door, but I was relieved to find Snow with a big smile on her face. She grabbed my arm and said, âCome in, Bash! Youâre just the person I need right now.â
I laughed. âWell it feels good to be needed, I guess. Whatâs up?â
âfutile My article. I finally started it,â she said. âAnd Iâd love another writerâs help, if youâre willing to give me some feedback?â
âOf course, Iâd be happy to, but I donât know if Iâd call myself a writer. I havenât written a word in months.â
âThat needs to change. Iâm going to give you my contact info, and I want you to promise me youâll send me the manuscript when itâs finished, okay?â
Snow was excited to read my book. Iâd never had someone interested in reading my work before. My parents told me that writing as a career was a fruitless endeavor and a waste of my talents, which they thought would be better served working in the fashion industry. Obviously that couldnât be further from the truth.
âUh, okay,â I said, smiling at the thought of her reading my book.
âYou havenât told me much about it,â Snow said as she curled up on the couch and patted the spot next to her. Her laptop was on the coffee table along with a cup of tea.
âWell we still have plenty of time for that.â
Her face fell and she looked away from me. âMaybe less time than I had planned.â
âWhat do you mean by that?â
âWell⦠it looks like I may have to leave Monday morning. My boss needs me back at work.â She rolled her eyes. âItâs either that or Iâm fired, and since I canât afford losing my job, I guess I have to cut my trip short. But I swear, I will be back.â
My heart sank. We hardly knew each other, but I was hoping to get to know her better over her stay. To find out she was leaving sooner than expected was not news I had hoped to hear. âYou better be.â
She had mentioned staying in touch after leaving. I had never kept in touch with any guest once they walked out the door. Some were repeat clients and I might remember their names, but that was about it which I was fine with.
I actually liked the idea of keeping in touch with Snow. Maybe I was thinking too far ahead but perhaps it would lead to something down the road. I reminded myself that the romantic side of me was always getting in trouble and moving too fast but I really did like her.
âOh I will be back, that much is guaranteed,â she said. âSo anyway, hereâs what I have so farâ¦â
She handed me the laptop.
âThereâs only one sentence so far,â I said.
âBut itâs a good one, right? Iâm off to a great start!â
I had to laugh because I knew that feeling all too well. At least she was proud of that single line of work, rather than questioning if she had the talent to actually write the piece.
